New Challenges for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities: Aging and Dementia

Presented By:         Kathleen Ceips, RN

Office for Citizens with Developmental Disabilities

As the population of individuals with Intellectual Disabilities is living longer they are predisposed to diseases related to aging, Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Historically behavioral changes have been attributed to defiance, non-compliance and being ornery. It is imperative that caregivers and members of the extended professional support team for individuals with developmental disabilities be educated on the potential causes of confusion, inability to perform familiar tasks and outbursts of anger such as medication side effects, long term medication use, biochemical changes and the potential for dementia and not attributed to defiance and non-compliance.
